1) Bluegrass concert/BBQ for Beach School (8/23)
Local bluegrass band, The Loafers, will play at The Overlook House Saturday, August 23rd, 2014.
5-9 PM (band will play from 6-8:30).
Historic Overlook House: 3839 N Melrose Drive.
The Beach School Fundraising Committee is hosting this family-friendly event: a free concert with concessions (beer, wine and food) being sold to benefit Beach School.

2) Movie and Costume Contest in Overlook Park (deadline 8/27)
Don’t miss the showing of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark at Overlook Park on Sunday of Labor Day weekend (8/31). At 7:00, OKNA will hold a Costume Contest (for 18 years & under). Kids can dress as any character from the film. They will be judged in three groups: 5 years and younger, 6-12 years and 13-18. All contestants will win a prize. The top three winners will get – first prize: a 27" x 40" Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark movie poster; second prize: "Pizza School" at Pinky’s Pizzeria; third prize: a New Seasons gift certificate.
Participation is limited, so make sure the child or parent registers soon–the deadline is 8/27. Email child’s name, age and contact number to movie@overlookneighborhood.org. Speaking of preparedness (yes we were!), it’s about time for the…..
Overlook NET (Neighborhood Emergency Team) quarterly meeting
Thursday, September 4th

This is an invitation to anyone living in (or near!) the Overlook neighborhood. Some of us have gone through the NET training (and we encourage others to do so). But, if not, we’re thrilled to have more neighbors involved. ‘Cause that’s how we’re going to weather whatever storms find us. So bring a friend, too.
Our main order of business will be discussing the Overlook Operations (‘Ops’) Plan, which, yes, that would be the OOP. 13 other neighborhoods have submitted drafts already; we need to start pulling one together for us. My guess is that ‘Ops Plan Changes’ will be a standing agenda item for some time. We’ll try to get a draft out a few days in advance.
Co-Captain Mitch Bixby’s interest leans towards developing our radio networks. While this falls under the Ops Plan, there’s been quite a lot of motion around wireless communication, so this might be another topic of discussion. That also relates to non-disaster communication and outreach, which could be a third agenda item.

5) Water Bureau Seeks Input re: Boil Water Alert
In late May of this year the Portland Water Bureau sent a drinking water advisory (boil water notice) to customers telling them to boil their drinking water because of potential contamination.
While the Water Bureau is always working to keep our drinking water safe, we would also like to improve how we communicate important information to you in an emergency situation.
We want to hear from you about your experience during the drinking water advisory in May. Please go to the link below and complete a short survey. The survey will ask you how you received information and advice on what to do during the incident.
We will use this information to improve the way we communicate with you and other community members in the future.

6) Concerned About Demolitions and Development?
Demolition/Development Summit II:
United Neighborhood Associations for Reform
Despite initiatives advanced by individual neighborhood associations or small groups of neighborhood associations that have resulted in a number of homes being spared from destruction, as well as modest reform from the Bureau of Development Services in the area of demolition notification, the demolition/development “epidemic” continues to roar along. The Comprehensive Plan Update is one avenue toward substantive, long-term reform, but the final product is months, maybe years away. Meanwhile, developers transform our neighborhoods, seemingly without regard to character and heritage. Given the immediacy and urgency of the problem, prompt building code reform is essential.
