1) This Week! OKNA Picnic: Tuesday, August 19th
Join your neighbors for our annual summer gathering, held this year at the new Atomic Pizza location at 1936 N Killingsworth (@ N Denver Ave). Owners Jenna and Bill have arranged a buffet spread for us to choose from, at $8 per person. Expect varied slices of pizza, including vegan options, green and spinach salads, cookies/sweets and fountain soft drinks. 3) The Willamette Speaks Oral History storytelling event (8/23)
We often see it and cross it, but do we appreciate the lower Willamette River? Do we see it’s uniqueness and vital connection to our community both past and present, or recognize it as the commons? The Willamette Speaks Oral History sponsored by the superfund community advisory group seeks to reconnect community members with the lower 11 miles on the river through storytelling. The first of three storytelling events will explore the river as the commons and will feature three speakers. Superfund advisors will also be on hand to answer questions about the clean up, and offer avenues for feedback to the EPA and local leaders.

4) Bluegrass concert/BBQ for Beach School (8/23)
Local bluegrass band, The Loafers, will play at The Overlook House Saturday, August 23rd, 2014.
5-9 PM (band will play from 6-8:30) at Historic Overlook House: 3839 N Melrose Drive.
The Beach School Fundraising Committee is hosting a family-friendly event at the Overlook House in North Portland the evening of August 23rd. It’s a free concert with concessions (beer, wine and food) being sold to benefit Beach School.

5) Overlook Views Delivery Heroes: Thank You!
In my usual rush to complete the last newsletter and include everything, I forgot one of the most important items: My deep thanks to all the Overlook neighbors who have volunteered their time and shoe leather to deliver your neighborhood newsletter to you.
As often as every other month, the Delivery Heroes take a route of 100 or more papers and drop one to every residence and business possible in Overlook. This dedication has kept the print edition of Overlook’s important events in everyone’s hands, whether they have internet or not.
More importantly, these are neighbors practicing what we all preach, getting out and meeting people face to face. I think this has contributed immensely to the sense of community we enjoy and Delivery Heroes regularly tell me how much they enjoy being of service to Overlook in this way.
A friend and I were recounting delivery stories this week, and noticing how turning up on someone’s doorstep can illicit a combative first impression, but as soon as they see that neighborhood newsletter, it’s all smiles and usually a new friend.
Thank you, all of you over the years, for your rain or shine delivery duties and an extra tip of the cap to the Delivery Coordinators who have kept the routes covered and made it easy for everyone to volunteer: Alan Cranna and Carol Cushman are Delivery Heroes too!

6) OLCC Notice of Liquor License Application
The OLCC has received an application for a Full On-Premises Sales license and an Off-Premises Sales license for Milk Glass Mkt. The proposed business will be located in the space that was previously licensed as Atomic Pizza.
A holder of a Full On-Premises Sales license may sell by the drink (including tastings) of wine, malt beverages, cider, and distilled liquor for consumption at the business. The license holder may also allow a patron to remove a partially consumed bottle of wine from the premises is the wine was served in conjunction with a meal. The license also allows the "to go" sale of malt beverages, wine, and cider in securely covered containers with a capacity of two gallons or less provided by the consumer (commonly called growlers).
The Off-Premises Sales license will allow the holder to also sell factory sealed containers of malt beverages, wine, or cider for consumption off the licensed premises.
The legal hours for alcohol sales are 7:00 to 2:30 AM all days. The applicant’s proposed hours of operation are:
9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Sunday- Thursday; and 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Friday and Saturday.
The proposed business has indoor table seating for approximately 28 patrons, plus outdoor sidewalk café seating for 22 patrons. The applicant will need to obtain a City of Portland Sidewalk Cafe Permit for sidewalk cafe seating. The applicant is not proposing to offer entertainment.

If you’ve taken a look at it or perused the draft Comprehensive Plan, you may have some questions about how it might affect your property, your neighborhood, or Portland. 8) The Tour de Lab bicycle ride (9/7)
The annual Tour de Lab ride is an annual community bicycle ride and fundraising event benefiting Dove Lewis, Portland’s only 24 hour emergency care animal hospital. The route comes through the Overlook Neighborhood.
Tour de Lab will take place on September 7, 2014, and the start/finish line is at the Lucky Labrador Brewing Company 915 SE Hawthorne and includes the three other Lucky Labrador locations as rest stops at 7675 SW Capitol Hwy and 1945 NW Quimby and 1700 N. Killingsworth. This whimsical dog-themed community bike ride is wacky fun with a costume contest and dog-themed treats at all locations en route.

To assist in the safety of congregated bike riders at the start/finish and at the rest stops, there will be one 1-block street closure in the North Portland neighborhood by the Killingsworth Lucky Lab Taproom from 9am-3pm, there will be a closure of N. Concord St. between N. Willamette Blvd and N. Killingsworth St. We will have amplified sound at controlled levels for music and announcements as well as beer allowed at the finish line from the Lucky Lab SE on SE 9th Ave between SE Hawthorne and SE Madison.
We anticipate approximately 1200 riders to participate. All riders agree to share the road and follow normal rules of the road for cyclists, and emphasis is given in ride promotions and materials on the importance of respecting other users of road and trail and following all rules for shared usage.
