1) Meals program at Patton Square Park

Summer Fillable Flyer_5-11-15A new free summer meals site has launched at Patton Square City Park located at N Interstate Avenue and N Emerson Street. The meals program is open to all children and teens aged 1-18 and operated Monday to Friday, noon-12:30. Click on the flyer for more information.

Adult meals also are available for purchase for $4 each. Please keep in mind that meals must be eaten in the park.

2) Illegal dumping

dumpingHave you seen garbage and other refuse illegally dumped on public property? Metro (the regional government) operates a Regional Illegal Dumping Patrol. You can report illegal dumping by calling 503-234-3000 or by filing a report online.

Illegal dumps threaten human health and wildlife in the region. Trash, old appliances, torn mattresses, used tires, broken furniture, oil, antifreeze and pesticides are a few of the things illegal dumpers leave on public lands and sidewalks, in alleyways and waterways.

If you see illegal dumpers in the act, do not confront them; call local police. Note the vehicle’s license plate number, make and model, material dumped and location.

Since 1993, Metro has worked closely with other local government agencies and law enforcement to quickly and thoroughly investigate and remove illegal dumps. Metro’s investigating officers will try to locate the owner of the trash and its illegal hauler. Depending on the situation, the owner of the trash may be fined or cited, along with the hauler who dumped illegally. Fines cover the cost of cleaning up and properly managing waste from dump sites. Multnomah County inmate crews assigned to Metro from the Inverness jail cleans up sites throughout much of the region.

3) Boat launch on Swan Island

The Portland Bureau of Environmental Services and Portland Parks and Recreation have reached a deal for parks to take over the Swan Island boat launch and spend an estimated $600,000 fixing it up and improving security. Developers, however, are challenging use of the planned funds for the project.

Read all about it in this Portland Mercury story by Overlook resident Dirk VanderHart.

4) Six months of sun

OKNA board member Chris Trejbal takes photos using a six-month exposure to capture the sun’s path across the sky each day. For the past six months, his pinhole camera hung on N Overlook Terrace and captured the heritage oak tree there. Enjoy this unique view of a neighborhood landmark.

6) Overlook yard sale and free share (July 23-24)

Sustainable Overlook has announced dates for the annual neighborhood yard sale and free share. Dozens of homes will make their yards and garages available to sell treasures, oddities and more on Saturday, July 23, and anything left over can be set out to be given away for free to neighbors on Sunday, July 24.  Mark your calendars and come on out.

If you would like to participate in the yard sale and have your house shown on the map that will be advertised to the broader public, sign up online by July 18. Deal hunters will find a map showing participating households starting July 20.

If you have questions, please e-mail Josh at sustainable@overlookneighborhood.org.

7) Help the Overlook Neighborhood

The annual Providence Bridge Pedal will take place on August 14. As in recent years, Overlook Neighborhood residents will operate a rest stop in St. Johns at the U.S. Bank Plaza 7 a.m. to noon. Consider volunteering to help riders, promote Overlook and raise money for our neighborhood. Every volunteer earns $25 for the Overlook Neighborhood Association. If you’re interested in participating, email Alan Cranna at ascran3@hotmail.com

Overlook also is looking for volunteers to help deliver our quarterly newspaper, The Overlook Views. Deliverers are assigned a route that typically takes about an hour to complete solo. It’s a great way to get out and meets some neighbors. Anyone interested should email views@overlookneighborhood.org for more information.

8) July OKNA Board meeting canceled (July 5)

The Overlook Neighborhood Association Board will not meet in July.

The July OKNA General Meeting will take place on July 19. The topic of this month’s meeting is “Marijuana legalization – One year later.” Join your neighbors to learn about how legalization is affecting Overlook and Portland.

9) June OKNA meeting and social a huge success

Overlook residents gathered at the Luck Labrador Tap Room this week to socialize and hear from housing experts. Groups attending included the Community Alliance of Tenants, Portland Tenants United and City Club of Portland. Learn more about their presentations on our website.
