1) Overlook’s movie premiere

Neighbors probably remember when Disney film crews descended on the Overlook Neighborhood in the summer of 2018. The movie they were shooting, “Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made,” dropped its first trailer last week. Overlook streets are the stage for many scenes of a movie set in Portland. The water tower near Beach Elementary School is especially prominent as the title character lives under it. After some prompting by OKNA, The Oregonian updated its story to identify our iconic water tower.

“Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made” debuts on the Disney+ streaming service on Feb. 7.

2) Prepare for winter weather

With snow and freezing temperatures forecast for this week, Overlook residents should take some steps to prepare. There’s always a possibility that heavy snow and ice could knock out power.

  • Head to the grocery store today if you can and pick up enough food to last a few days. The weather is forecast to be above freezing at night by Friday.
  • Make sure you have batteries for flashlights, blankets and ways to keep busy without electricity like board games or puzzles.
  • If there is snow, see if you can work from home. Portland’s motorists don’t handle snow and ice well. The Portland Bureau of Transportation will plow some streets, but in Overlook there aren’t many. View an interactive map of the plowing plan.
  • Also if there’s snow and you have a shovel, clear your sidewalk. Consider clearing your neighbor’s too.
  • Check in on neighbors, especially older ones. Let’s have each other’s back.
  • Build a snowman or take some kids sledding. Have some fun!

3) Adidas crane coming down

Adidas continues to make good progress on its new buildings in the Overlook Neighborhood. The south building, closer to Madrona Park, is nearing completion. Turner Construction, the contractor for the project, will begin dismantling the south crane on Wednesday.

Deconstruction of the crane will involve building a wooden pad on N Delaware Avenue and a mobile crane brought in on Friday. The real dismantling work will begin on Saturday and, if everything goes to schedule, be completed the subsequent Monday. The work will generate some noise but will be done within normal construction hours.

Following removal of the crane, adidas also must demolish the crane footing along the multi-use path. That work will be done Jan. 27-31. It will be very noise but also done during normal construction hours.

4) Ramp and street closures

The Oregon Department of Transportation will continue to work in Overlook, necessitating closure of highway ramps and local streets. This week watch out for:

  • The ramp from I-5 south to N Alberta Street (Exit 303) is scheduled to re-open tonight (Sunday) at 9 p.m.
  • The ramp from N Alberta Street to I-5 north is scheduled to close tonight (Sunday) at 9 p.m. for a week, re-opening Sunday, Jan. 19 at 9 p.m. Drivers should use the entrance at N Rosa Parks Way as an alternative.
  • N Interstate Avenue southbound between N Skidmore Street and N Russell Street will have nighttime intermittent closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Wednesday to Friday this week.
  • N Greeley Avenue southbound south of N Going Street will have nighttime intermittent closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Wednesday to Friday this week

The I-5 ramp closures are for installation of live information signs. The local street closures are part of the ongoing repairs being made to the Fremont Bridge.

Please plan your travel accordingly this week and be sure to take extra caution around road workers. Also drive with extra patience as visitors to our neighborhood adjust to the detours. The local street closures could impact TriMet bus routes. Check detours, delays and closure online.

5) Street parking permits near adidas

The temporary parking permit system on streets around adidas will go live soon. If you live in the permit zone, be sure to apply for your permits as soon as possible. The application and instructions are available here.

The program is being funded by adidas for about a year and half during construction. The goal is to prevent adidas employees from parking on neighborhood streets. When construction is complete, a new underground parking garage will be large enough to accommodate adidas workers.
