1) Candidates sought for OKNA Board

Do you love Overlook? Do you want to help keep it Portland’s best neighborhood? Do you live or own a business in the neighborhood? If so, then you should run for the Overlook Neighborhood Association board. When you serve on the board, you’ll be in the know about what’s happening around the neighborhood and help make important decisions. It’s rewarding and fun.

We’ll hold elections for 15 seats on the board at the annual meeting on Sept. 17 (location TBA). If there are more than 15 candidates, they will be invited to speak for two minutes prior to the election.

If you’d like to run for the board, send an email to chair@overlookneighborhood.org. Include your address, nearest cross street if you have no address, or the business/non-profit based in Overlook that you represent. Candidates who declare by Sept. 10 will appear on the printed ballots. Other candidates may ask to be added to the ballot up to the Sept. 17 meeting.

Board members serve one year terms and should expect to attend two meetings per month (currently first and third Tuesdays), though occasional absences are not a problem.

2) Movie in the Park on Saturday

Don’t forget to join your neighbors at Overlook Park on Saturday (Aug. 31) for the annual Movie in the Park put on by the Overlook Neighborhood Association in partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation.

We’ll watch Moana this year, with the film starting at dusk. There will be food vendors and fun beginning at 6:30. Arrive early to get the best seats at this popular event.

3) Tour de Lab returns to Overlook next weekend

The Tour de Lab is a community bike ride that raises funds for the DoveLewis Animal Hospital. Riders will be in the Overlook Neighborhood on Sunday, Sept. 1 headed to and from Lucky Lab on N Killingsworth Street. Learn more about the event.

The portion of the route in Overlook will include Ainsworth, Denver, Willamette, Concord and Skidmore. Riders will be in the neighborhood between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The route will involve road closure on Concord between Killingworth and Willamette beginning at about 9:30 a.m. Expect delays in the area.

Organizers anticipate about 650 riders. Riders will start in waves in Southeast Portland over 2.5 hours to ensure they will be spread out on route. Route marshals are in place at important intersections to ensure safety, and there will be motorcycle escorts on the course.

All participants receive heavy messaging in the website, event flyers, emails and at the ride start regarding respectful shared road/path usage and they commit to abide by this as ride participants in their rider registration.

4) North Portland Emergency Preparedness Summit

Ready to learn more about getting ready for a major disaster? You’re not alone. Your neighbors are preparing and want to help.

North Portland Neighborhood Emergency Teams, including the Overlook NET, are hosting a three-hour emergency preparedness summit with special guest speaker Steve Eberlein on Sept. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Charles Jordan Community Center (9009 N Foss Ave.)

Eberlein witnessed the Boxing Day Tsunami in Sri Lanka. He is a global aid worker as well as a workplace and community resilience advocate. The Red Cross, TEDxPortland and at many other West Coast locations have sponsored his talk because it is popular presentation that builds hope and gives encouragement as well as practical, helpful information.

A panel discussion featuring neighborhood and area groups will follow Eberlein’s presentation. Panelists will share the ways that neighbors are already getting ready for The Big One in North Portland. There will be time for discussion and questions from the audience.

Before and after the talks, browse tables where local groups and vendors will share specific, practical ways you can make your family and home safer in case of a disaster. When you break it down into manageable pieces, you’ll see that getting prepared is more a state of mind than a single destination and every little bit you do helps.

Advance registration is not necessary, but if you let NET know you’re interested or going on the event page, you’ll receive timely reminders in the days leading up to it. You’ll also find more information about speakers and vendors.

5) Adidas employee store pass expires Saturday

Looking for some last minute adidas gear for your back-to-school student? Some clothing bargains for the fall? The Overlook adidas pass to the employee store expires on Saturday, Aug. 31. The store is located in the Montgomery Park building. Overlook residents will receive employee discount pricing (up to 50 percent off) on shoes, clothing and more.

Overlook neighborhood residents may bring up to four additional guests with them. To redeem the offer, present a government-issued ID that shows you live in Overlook (zip code 97217 or 97227).

Thank you to Atomic Pizza for hosting the Overlook Neighborhood Association Summer Social last week. We had a great turnout of neighbors who socialized and chatted informally out issues in Overlook.
