3) Restore Overlook Bluff with FOOB (10/6)
Friends of Overlook Bluff is beginning its efforts to restore the slope of Overlook Bluff on Saturday, October 6th from 9 am – 1 pm. Volunteers are welcome and needed!
FOOB is partnering with SOLVE and Jim Schiller, Watershed Revegetation Program Supervisor for the City of Portland Environmental Services. We will be removing invasive species such as English ivy and wild clematis from the bluff below the Heritage Oregon white oak tree on Overlook Terrace. This project will be followed in the spring by a planting of native plants. Our goal is to preserve and restore the corridor of Oregon white oak and Pacific madrone habitat that once extended from Vancouver, BC to California. We are lucky to have an expert on hand and a BES team that has already done the more labor intense prep work. Dave Wacker has offered to haul the extra debris for free!
The day will start with homemade doughnuts and coffee and finish with a picnic and Miss Zumstein cookies under the oak tree on the bluff. For more information contact Ruth Oclander at (503) 417-7884 or sign up at:

6) Beach School Boundary Changes – Meeting on 10/10
Portland Public Schools is planning to make changes to the boundaries and programs of Beach School and the other neighborhood schools that feed to Jefferson. This is an attempt to balance enrollment, easing overcrowding on some schools and directing students to schools that have too few students. Options currently on the table including closing Beach, sending the neighborhood or immersion programs to another location, or redirecting portions of the neighborhood to another school; all have significant impacts on Beach and it surrounding community. The other schools in the cluster potentially impacted are: Boise-Eliot, Chief Joseph, Faubion, King, Ockley Green, Vernon, and Woodlawn.
The District will be holding meetings at Beach on Wednesday, October 10th from 6:00 – 7:30 pm (in English with Spanish translation) and onTuesday, October 16th from 6:00 – 7:30 pm (in Spanish with English translation). Families, students, local businesses, neighborhood associations, and community organizations such as churches and civic groups all need to give input at these meetings on decisions that will impact our school. Please plan now to attend and to speak up for Beach and its students and community.
If you cannot make this meeting but would still like to make your opinion count, you should email your concerns to: Judy Brennan at the district office (jbrennan@pps.net), with copies to Aaron Smirl (president@beachpta.org) and Paul Anthony (paul@shannonpratt.com).
What else can I do to help?
The District needs to hear from everyone in the community. Please get in touch with us if you know anyone with neighborhood church or neighborhood business contacts, local childcare providers, neighborhood civic groups, neighborhood non-profits, or neighborhood social networks. We will make sure they get invited to meetings, and get surveys. Email contact info to president@beachpta.org and paul@shannonpratt.com.
