3) Mayoral Candidate Forum: Building an Age-Friendly Portland (Saturday, 4/7)

AARP Oregon and Elders in Action are hosting a forum for mayoral candidates on the topic of “Building an Age-Friendly Portland.” Prior to and following the forum, community members will be asked to answer polling questions intended to identify priorities that they associate with building an age-friendly Portland.

Leading Portland mayoral candidates: Eileen Brady, Charlie Hales, and Jefferson Smith. This event is not a debate, but rather an opportunity for each candidate to share their vision of an “Age-Friendly Portland,” learn more about how Portland has been addressing World Health Organization (WHO) Age-Friendly criteria and respond to questions from the audience and interested Portlanders regarding these issues.

The candidate forum will be moderated by KGW-TV anchor and Straight Talk host Laural Porter.

Where: Doubletree Hilton, Holladay Ballroom
1000 NE Multnomah Street, Portland, OR, 97232

When: April 7th, 2012
This date was selected as it is the World Health Organization’s “World Health Day.” In 2012, the day will focus on the topics of aging and health.

Why: This candidate forum is focused on “Building an Age-Friendly Portland” based on the ongoing efforts to create a Portland that is friendly for those of all ages and abilities. Portland is currently a member of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Network of Age-friendly Cities based on the WHO’s acceptance of an application that was completed by current mayor Sam Adams and the Institute on Aging at Portland State University.

Outcomes of the Age-Friendly Portland project include: (1) conducting research on the features and barriers to age friendliness in Portland, (2) creating an Action Plan to address the rapid aging of Portland’s population, and (3) developing measures that will track the progress of Portland’s age friendliness over time.

This forum was proposed by the advisory group for the Age-Friendly Portland project and is specifically intended to elicit the responses of Portland’s mayoral candidates on the topic of building an age-friendly Portland. The hope is that the future mayor of Portland will be knowledgeable about the challenges associated with our city’s aging population, “carry the torch” by continuing to offer support to the efforts of the current project, collaborate with the myriad organizations that are trying to make Portland an more age-friendly city, and have the ability to navigate the needs and use the assets that exist among Portlanders of all ages and abilities.

For additional information about the forum, contact Bandana Shrestha from AARP Oregon at BShrestha@aarp.org.

4) Public Safety News

A big THANK YOU for all our neighbors using Overlook email and Facebook messages to share information about safety issues in their pocket of Overlook. We’ve recently answered queries and shared reports regarding noisy neighbors, stolen bicycles, backyard creepers/front door knockers and more.

Additional thanks to our great public safety city employees, including our district police officers and Crime Prevention Coordinator Mark Wells. Mark coordinates many casual reports with our district police officers, ensuring a more comprehensive look at ‘just that one petty crime’… who knows when it is part of a pattern if we don’t share information?

You can join in the conversation by reading and posting at www.facebook.com/OKNAinPDX and encouraging your neighbors to join this email list by visiting our web page: www.OverlookNeighborhood.org

Laura M is asking around for a lawn mowing recommendation and Quin P is looking for a dog walker. Shar S posts about tomorrow’s Trayvons Mothers March for Community Unity while Metro mailed in to let us know about natural gardening workshops. Facebook is a great place for us to post a wider variety of events than this email digest.
