5) NPNS Small Grants Program 2013 (10/23)

Does your neighborhood project need funding?

The North Portland Neighborhood Services Small Grants Program (NPNSG) is a grant provided by the City of Portland, distributed by the Office of Neighborhood Involvement (ONI) and administered by North Portland Neighborhood Services. The goal of program is to provide neighborhood and community organizations the opportunity to build community, attract new and diverse members, and sustain those already involved. The continual support of this grant program has allowed a wide variety of community projects to be funded and implemented each year.

NPNS will be distributing approximately $20,000 total for community projects to be completed by December 2013. Grant application and selection will be administered by NPNSG committee members, made up of seven North Portland residents, occurring this winter January 2013.

You are encouraged to attend the free North Portland Neighborhood Services grant writing workshop:
Tuesday October 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Historic Kenton Firehouse, 8105 N. Brandon St.

You will learn about grant writing, the application and selection process, meet committee members, learn about other projects seeking grant funding for possible collaboration, and how to get individual help with your grant.

NPNS application form and instructions are available at: http://www.portlandonline.com/oni/index.cfm?c=53475&

7) Noises in North Portland (info)

If you have heard unexplained noises from further north, this explanation from Metro may help:

“You may have heard loud noises reminiscent of shotguns, other gunfire or fireworks coming from the Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area over the last week. The sounds are from equipment Metro has temporarily installed to move birds off of the wetlands in response to a fast‐moving wildlife disease outbreak. We apologize for the disturbance and lack of notice, but this is an urgent situation and hazing is our best option; we appreciate your patience during this time.

8) North Portland Cares! (info)

Imagine our delight as we were scanning over the grassroots neighborhood e-missive North Portland Cares! this week when we saw a message to.. us!

“I hope that for those of you who receive and read the enewsletters , whereas to some this might seem like a St. Johns communication tool, that is not the intent.  I really am wanting it to be a North Portland means of communicating!  So please, Kenton, Overlook, Arbor Lodge, Bridgeton, Cathedral Park, Hayden Island, Linnton, Piedmont, Portsmouth, University Park,  please let me know of information you would like shared.  I thank you so very much for doing so!!”

Mike’s list is an invaluable guide to the kinds of events that really make up the fabric of a tight community, taking care of each other, sharing what we have in excess, congratulating successes. If that sounds interesting, subscribe! If you are a Roosevelt alum or booster, you simply must join; what an active campus! If your group would like to reach a larger North Portland audience, send your news or subscription request to Michael Verbout:mikeverbout@cheerful.com

Thanks, Mike!
