1) Homeless camp on Greeley Avenue

After considerable deliberation, the Overlook Neighborhood Association Board this week announced opposition to plans for a temporary or permanent homeless camp on N Greeley Avenue near N Interstate Avenue. (Read news coverage about the camp.) The board will discuss sending a letter to City Council and the Oregon Department of Transportation stating its opposition and asking that ODOT and the city evict the current campers without delay at its next board meeting.

In the meantime, OKNA Board Member Chris Trejbal shared the board’s concerns and opposition at Wednesday’s City Council meeting. He invited Mayor Charlie Hales to attend an OKNA meeting to answer neighborhood questions about the camp. Overlook resident Peggy Allen joined Chris at the Council meeting. Watch their testimony and the council’s response below (or on Youtube).

Stay tuned for more news about the camp. If you have comments about the camp, you can send them to Mayor Hales. Also plan to attend the OKNA general meeting on Oct. 20 to discuss it.

3) City plans for affordable housing in North Portland (Tuesday, Oct. 13)

On Oct. 21, Portland City Council will consider a proposal to increase funds spent on affordable housing in urban renewal districts, including the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area in North/Northeast Portland. The “set-aside” of urban renewal dollars earmarked for affordable housing could increase from 30 percent to 50 percent.

This proposal could raise $80 million for affordable housing citywide, and build more than 800 new affordable homes. Many of these new housing opportunities would be in N/NE Portland, and could even help families move back to their former neighborhoods.

Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods and North & Northeast Neighbors for Housing Affordability have endorsed this proposal and will hold an open house for residents to learn more about it. Snacks will be provided.
