1) Celebrate spring by taking the Healthy Lawn and Garden Pledge

More than 450 Overlook neighbors have pledged to go pesticide-free in their yard and garden. Will you join them so that together we can build a safer, healthier neighborhood? Take Metro’s Healthy Lawn and Garden Pledge and receive a free lady bug yard sign.

Learn more about natural gardening basics, composting and working with garden challenges without resorting to toxic pesticides that can harm people, pets, waterways and wildlife.

2) Annual yard sale and free share

As you do your spring cleaning, don’t forget that the Sustainable Overlook will hold its annual neighborhood yard sale free share again this summer, July 19-20. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors and reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Registration will open in June and will be online again this year. Households that sign up will be marked on the map, on our website and in published listings. Suggested donation is $10 to cover printing and advertising costs. Email sustainable@overlookneighborhood.org with questions.

3) Adidas construction

Adidas will erect a third construction crane on its Overlook campus. This one will be for construction of the south building (where the tennis courts were) that is part of the overall campus expansion. Footing excavation should be complete. Concrete pours are scheduled for this week, and crane installation is planned for May 20-23. Sidewalks along the Denver pedestrian path will be closed during this phase of construction. (Click on the map to see details.)

The Oregonian and KOIN had stories about tensions between adidas and its closest neighbors over construction issues. The Oregonian story quotes OKNA board members Lauren Alfrey and Chris Trejbal.

The stories identified the cranes, parking and use of homes owned by the company as office space as particular points of contention. OKNA has filed a formal complaint with the city about the use of homes as construction offices.

If you have questions or concerns about the construction, you can contact adidas at overlook@adidas.com and OKNA’s adidas liaison at adidasconst@gmail.com.

4) OKNA board meeting on Tuesday

The Overlook Neighborhood Association will hold its monthly board meeting on Tuesday, May 7, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Historic Overlook House (3839 N Melrose Drive). The board will consider requests from the Linnton Neighborhood that OKNA weigh in on tar sands shipments to the Zenith facility and on a historic building. The board also will discuss installing plantings in diverters for the Willamette Boulevard greenway project. View the full agenda. Residents are welcome to attend.
