2015 Ice Cream Social
2015 Ice Cream Social

Elvira Raven was well known for her community-mindedness and opening her home, the future Historic Overlook House, to neighborhood children for ice cream … after all, the Ravens’ business was a creamery. That tradition continues today.

Join your neighbors at the annual Overlook Neighborhood Ice Cream Social on Sunday, Aug. 7. Lovely’s Fifty Fifty generously will provide ice cream at the discount rate of $2 for adults and $1 for kids. There also will be bocce ball and games of skill  as well as a prize drawing. Don’t miss one of the sweetest, most friendly summer events in Overlook.

2) Questions about Hazelnut Grove

The Overlook Neighborhood Association has asked Mayor Charlie Hales’ office to clarify plans for relocating the Hazelnut Grove homeless camp. Hales’ office so far has declined to answer questions. Learn more and review the questions asked on our website.

3) Overlook mural update

Mural1Since the last update, Viva La Free’s innovative mural pilot project in partnership with the Overlook Neighborhood Association has received additional generous grants from  Lester Viles of the North Portland Project Fund ($1,000), North Portland Neighborhood Services Spring Boost Grant ($500), food and beverage donation from New Season’s ($75) and other local businesses.

The team determined that rather than create a linear, historical timeline, they will create an abstract painting that represents the indigenous cosmology of the Native American tribes.

This month the youth team visited the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde reservation to meet with Kalapuya Tribe elders. The Kalapuya are one of the tribes that lived in the area that is now Overlook. The youth asked permission to use iconography and legends of the tribe in the mural, visited the cultural center, studied historical archives on the reservation and were invited to the Grand Ronde Salmon Ceremony that commemorates restoration of net fishing for the first time in more than 100 years.

In keeping with the history and green spaces within Overlook, the mural will symbolically reflect the cyclical aspects of the natural world on the organic and sub atomic levels. Tentatively titled “Three Sisters” to pay homage to the tremendous Oaks in the heart of Overlook, as well as honoring past, present and future. The team hopes to complete the project in September.

4) New Columbia to the slough and Vanport site walk (July 30)

Stroll through a few great neighborhoods undergoing changes with Portland Parks and Recreation as we see and hear about new parks, developments and a recent transportation safety project.

Part of the Ten Toe Express walk series.  The health benefits of walking are numerous, including reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity.  Walking with others provides the added benefits of a valuable support network and new friendships.

The walk will be 3.8 miles. Meet at McCoy Park.
