2) Organic Brewers Festival returns to Overlook (Aug. 13-16)
The North American Organic Brewers Festival – the world’s only organic brewers festival – will celebrate its 11th year this August 13 -16 at Overlook Park. Event hours are noon to 9 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Designed to raise awareness about organic beer and sustainable living, the festival will serve 63 organic beers, ciders, meads and braggots from three-dozen breweries located in the United States, Canada, Germany and England. Styles run the gamut from Ambers to Belgians to Wild Ales, with a bit of everything in-between. (A complete list of participating breweries is available at www.naobf.org.) The event also offers live local music, organic food, sustainability-oriented vendors and non-profits and a kid’s area in a beautiful park setting.
This year’s event will feature an exceedingly rare opportunity to sample draft beer from Pinkus Müller, the world’s first certified organic brewery, located in Münster, Germany. Pinkus Ur-Pils and Pinkus Münster Alt kegs will be tapped on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the festival at 4pm daily. Because of its limited supply, only tasters will be available, and it will cost two tokens for a taste.
The festival is pleased to introduce the Merchant du Vin Organic Bottle Garden, which will feature 11 bottled beers and cider from Pinkus and Samuel Smith’s of Yorkshire, England. The bottled products will be available all days of the festival in both taster and full cup options. These products will cost either double or triple tokens (triple for fruit beers).
Admission into the NAOBF is free. The purchase of a $7 reusable, compostable cornstarch cup is required for tasting beer, as are tokens, which sell for $1 apiece. A full cup of beer costs four tokens and a taste costs one token; select beers, ciders and meads cost double tokens. Patrons receive an extra token with a validated Tri-Met ticket, a ticket from the Hopworks Bike Corral, or a valid ID with an Overlook neighborhood zip code (one extra token per person allowed).
The NAOBF is a family friendly event, and minors are welcome with parents. A kid’s area offers art activities, face painting and a root beer garden with complimentary Crater Lake Root Beer and Orange Cream Soda for minors (and designated drivers).
The NAOBF encourages responsible drinking and urges patrons to take advantage of the MAX Light Rail; the Yellow Line Overlook Park Station is adjacent to the festival. For more information about the NAOBF, visit naobf.org.

3) Help Portland write its marijuana rules (Thursday, Aug. 27)

4) Broadway Bridge closing to motor vehicles (Aug. 10-16)
The Broadway Bridge will be closed to motor vehicles from 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 10 to no later than 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16 for repairs. Bridge sidewalks will remain open.
The bridge closure is needed for deck repairs to be completed along the Portland Streetcar tracks on the bridge lift span. A streetcar contractor will complete the repairs.
During the closure, a contractor working for Multnomah County will complete installation of scaffolding and containment for painting the westernmost bridge span this month.
Currently, the bridge is down to two traffic lanes due to the painting project. The streetcar repairs will require closing the two lanes that have been open this summer.
During the closure, the NW Lovejoy ramp at the west end of the bridge will remain open for traffic to access the NW Broadway ramp to Old Town and downtown. TriMet’s 17-Holgate/Broadway bus route will detour to the Steel Bridge during the closure. Central Loop (CL) Streetcar service will remain closed during this work. CL service will resume on both sides of the river on Monday, Aug. 17.
Alternate river crossings open to motor vehicles include the Burnside, Fremont and Steel bridges. The traveling public is advised to expect delays while repairs are being made. We ask the public to travel cautiously, observe all lane closures and directions by reader boards and flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible.
5) Mark Shabbat in Overlook Park (Friday, Aug. 21)
Join Congregation Shir Tikvah for Shabbat in Overlook Park on Friday, Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. Bring a blanket or chairs and pack a picnic dinner to enjoy with while the band plays! Stumbleweed, our perennial favorite bluegrass band, will start our evening off with a selection of toe-tapping tunes.
Rabbi Ariel Stone and J.D. Kleinke will lead Shabbat prayers and songs starting around 6:45, and we’re bringing enough challah for everyone to have some. We’ll close out the night with more music from Stumbleweed.
Service animals welcome, but please leave other pets at home.
Parking will be available in the Kaiser WIN lots off of N Fremont Avenue. We’ll have someone there to point you in the right direction.
For more information, contact Shir Tikvah at office@shirtikvahpdx.org or call 503-473-8227

If you aren’t doing the ride, your best bet is to stay home Sunday morning to avoid headaches. Better yet, it’s not too late to volunteer at the Overlook Neighborhood Association booth.
