1) Overlook Summer Social

Mark your calendar for the Overlook Neighborhood Summer Social on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 6:30-8:30 p.m. We will gather at Atomic Pizza (1936 N Killingsworth St.). Atomic has generously agreed to offer residents pizza and salad special pricing. The social is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and to catch up with friends.

Members of the OKNA board will be present to discuss neighborhood issues with residents informally. We want to hear what’s on your mind.

The summer social will be held instead of an August OKNA general meeting.

2) Movie in the Park returns to Overlook Park

Don’t want to wait until Halloween to express your inner superhero?  Have kids who love dressing up as Batman or Stargirl? Then, Overlook Park is the perfect place for you and the kids on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. OKNA is partnering with Portland Parks & Recreation to show Wonder Woman as one of the last Summer Free for All movies of the season.

We’d like to see the park filled with adults and kids dressed as their favorite superheroes. Everyone in costume will receive a raffle ticket for prizes contributed by local businesses. They include gift certificates good for meals, ice cream, spa services and groceries; toys for the kids; and much more. Stop by the OKNA booth in costume to get your ticket.

Two face painters will be on hand 6-7:30 to put the final touches on kids’ decorations, and there will be music by Soul Vibrator (Power Funk and Yacht Rock) starting at 6:30. We’ll draw the first winning raffle tickets at 7. The movie will start at dusk. Runtime is about 2:20.

If you can’t walk, bike or take the Max to the park, make sure you park in Kaiser Permanente’s surface parking lots on the east side of N Interstate Avenue. We want to minimize cars parking in the neighborhood.

To enjoy watching the movie, come prepared with sand chairs, blankets, jackets, food and flashlights. We also ask that you pack out everything that you bring in. Remember, dogs in the park must be leashed.

We need a few volunteers to help before the movie starts. If you’re interested, contact Cynthia at info@overlookneighborhood.org.

See you on Sept. 2.

3) Water your trees

The meager sprinkles that passed over Portland on Saturday weren’t enough to quench the thirst of trees around Overlook. With forecast high temperatures in the 90s and even 100 over the next week, watering local trees is essential to their health. This is especially important for young trees planted in the past few years. They require a good soaking on a weekly basis throughout the summer to establish healthy root systems that will allow them to thrive for decades.

In addition, if you see a stressed tree on public land, call 503-823-TREE (8733) so they can send someone out to give it a drink.

4) OKNA objects to proposed development notification rules

The Overlook Neighborhood Association Board last week unanimously agreed to submit testimony about proposed neighborhood notification rules for developers. The proposed rules would allow developers who want to avoid neighborhood engagement to hold meetings far from the neighborhood at inconvenient times and would allow some neighborhood residential projects to skip a public airing entirely.

Read OKNA’s written testimony. Residents can submit their own comments through Friday at 5 p.m. online.

5) Would you like to run for the OKNA board?

The Sept. 18 Overlook Neighborhood Association General Meeting will be our annual meeting at which we elect 15 board members. Anyone interested in running for the board should send an email to info@overlookneighborhood.org by 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 to appear on the ballot. Residents may also declare a write-in candidacy at the meeting.

6) Adidas Employee Store pass

Adidas has invited all Overlook residents to visit the company’s employee store, where merchandise is discounted. The store no longer is on the adidas campus in Overlook but has moved to the Montgomery Park Building in Northwest. Click on the image below for details.
