8) Greenway Expansion Project & Construction Update (9/23)

You are invited to join us at the Daimler Trucks North America Informational Session: Greenway Expansion Project & Construction Update

As a member of the local community, you’re invited to an informational session about the Daimler Trucks North America headquarters construction project.

Where: Kenton Firehouse at 8105 N. Brandon Avenue
When: 6:30 – 7:30 pm, September 23, 2014

RSVP: Due to space limitations, we are asking that you RSVP if you intend to attend the informational session http://tinyurl.com/dtnafirehouse

On behalf of Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) – which has its global headquarters here in North Portland where it employs approximately 2,000 white collar employees – we want to bring the local community further “into the loop” on the start of our major building project on Swan Island.

As some of you may have already seen or heard in the local media, our project will include a new nine story office tower, a parking garage to support the new building and an overall enhancement of our Swan Island campus.

We are particularly excited about working with the Port of Portland to expand the public greenway trail that current runs along two of our corporate buildings along the Willamette River, but which was previously interrupted by the Ports O’ Call building (which has now been demolished).  Along with this expansion, we will improve public access to the trail by opening a new access point for the public to utilize and incorporate a new lookout into the trail within close proximity to the river. A rendering of the new site and greenway trail which gives a visual representation of the scope of the project will be presented at the informational session.

Construction recently began and is expected to run through the first quarter of 2016.  We hope and believe that the construction-related impacts to the North Portland neighborhoods will be relatively minor, but we do want the community to be aware that the project will require the installation of steel piles for a 10-week period starting in early to mid-September, the sound of which may be heard throughout the North Portland neighborhoods. Important updates on the construction will be provided periodically to North Portland Neighborhood Services and posted on the website of the Swan Island Business Association at  http://www.swanislandba.org/.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the project, please e-mail us at nova@daimler.com.

10) Friends of Trees turns 25, offers $25 street trees

To commemorate its 25th anniversary, Friends of Trees is offering residents a wide variety of street trees for just $25 to residents in Portland, Vancouver, Salem, and Eugene!

The price includes inspection, permits, delivery of a healthy young tree, and planting the tree in the strip between the sidewalk and the street. Street trees are regularly priced at $35-$75.

“Our goal is to bring the benefits of trees to even more neighbors,” said Scott Fogarty, Friends of Trees’ Executive Director. “Trees not only beautify our neighborhoods, they help lower power bills, raise home values, and clean our city’s air and water.”

Residents may sign up for trees at FriendsofTrees.org/plant or call 503-595-0212.

Once signed up, a city inspector will visit the resident’s home to assess planting space and conditions. Residents then order trees from a list of approved species and may show up to help on their neighborhood’s planting day, when Friends of Trees organizes volunteers to plant. A video of the entire process can be found here: http://bit.ly/1tMnIhk

Friends of Trees invites residents to match their tree purchase by sponsoring additional $25 trees for residents who can’t afford them.

“Cost should never be a barrier to getting a tree for your home,” Fogarty said. “Thanks to generous supporters, we can offer planting scholarships to a neighbors in need.”
