1) Santa to visit Overlook House (Dec. 7)

Santa Claus will visit Overlook House on Sunday, Dec. 7. Come tell Santa what you want  for the holidays and have your picture taken. There will be face painting and other fun activities as well.

2) City utility oversight listening session (Nov. 24)

A public meeting of the Portland Utility Oversight Blue Ribbon Commission will be held on Monday, Nov. 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Room C, 2nd Floor, Portland Building, 1120 SW Fifth Avenue.

The purpose of the meeting is for the commission to hear from members of the public on recommendations that have been presented to city council by the commission regarding oversight and accountability of the Portland Water Bureau and Bureau of Environmental Services. The Commission’s focus is on streamlining communications and transparency of the rate-making process. Members of the public and interested organizations are invited to come to share their views.

3) Pancake breakfast to support Roosevelt High School softball (Nov. 22)

On Saturday, Roosevelt High School softball will host its inaugural Pancake Feed at Kenton Station Restaurant & Pub. In the spring, the varsity team softball team will travel to San Diego for the first time in school history.  All money raised will help support these outstanding student athletes to pay for that trip and cover other necessary items for this upcoming season.  The team relies on fundraising for 100 percent of its expenses, including travel expenses, gear and uniforms.

4) Grants available for community watershed stewardship

The Community Watershed Stewardship Program (CWSP) is accepting pre-applications for stewardship grants. The deadline to submit pre-applications is 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6. A grant review committee will then invite selected applicants to submit full applications in April.

CWSP provides stewardship grants of up to $10,000 for projects that help Portlanders make improvements in their neighborhoods and communities, while improving watershed health. Projects funded by CWSP grants include replacing pavement with native plants; adding plants and trees to neighborhoods; and cleaning up and restoring streams.

CWSP has scheduled three grant-writing workshops to answer questions and provide help writing applications:

CWSP encourages applications for projects that involve the leadership and meaningful participation of people of color, immigrants, elders, youth, those with disabilities, low-income residents and other under-represented groups.

CWSP is a partnership between Environmental Services and Portland State University. Since it began in 1995, CWSP has granted more than $1 million for watershed projects and helped organize more than 40,000 volunteers to work on community projects.
