Neighbors Appreciate New DA’s Personal Approach
James Hayden: Accessible Police Leadership in North Portland
After going over a year without a local district attorney, residents of north Portland are pleased that they once again have an accessible source of police leadership. James Hayden, who most recently served as the deputy district attorney for Multnomah County, has worked as the North Portland DA for just over eight months. During his tenure, he has reached out to multiple community groups and has addressed the concerns of those who live in the neighborhoods that comprise the North Precinct.

Jim Hayden was the speaker at a recent OKNA meeting, where he shared some great stories about his past work in Overlook, including shaping the Good Neighbor agreement with the N Interstate Avenue motels that has been so helpful in curbing crime. He’s a passionate, energetic advocate for community policing and public safety in North Portland.
Portland Neighborhood/Business District Graffiti Cleanups
The struggle against graffiti may seem futile at t
imes, but a handful of programs have organized neighborhoods and businesses to combat the unwanted eyesore. The Portland Graffiti Abatement Program and other smaller neighborhood organizations have formed groups that seek to wash out the problem at its source.

OKNA’s own Crime Prevention Coordinator, Mark Wells, gets deserved praise in this article, for his graffiti busting Livability Teams, including Overlook’s Livability Team, a city first. These neighbors are really putting their neighborhood first, and contributing to improved safety and livability for us all. Be sure to thank them next time you see them, or better yet, become a graffiti buster yourself!

On a related note, the North Portland Public Safety Action Committee aka PSAC meets this week. This meeting is open to all North Portland neighbors and is a chance for you to hear from and interact with representatives from Portland Police Bureau, the District Attorney’s office, City Hall and others who can help us have an impact on crime and livability. This meeting is held on the 4th Wednesday of each month, at the Historic Kenton Firehouse.
