4) Overlook Evening Walkers Race Away (current)

Neighbor Joyce's proposed walking group, published last week, has taken off and is ready to expand. Several neighbors are already meeting in evenings at a fixed spot and time for a 30-45 minute turn around the neighborhood.

“I am interested in having a walking partner or partners in the evening hours, probably before dinner since we are entering the early-dark season. Those of us who live alone or don't have family members interested in walking could meet at a certain corner and walk together for a half hour or more. If there were several of us, each of us could come when we didn't have other commitments and hope to find at least one or two others.

If you are interested in walking with others around 5pm, email Joyce directly at jclacki@comcast.net.

5) Trick Or Treat for The Oregon Food Bank (10/31)

Neighbor Gilah sent in this exciting idea for how to spend your Halloween evening.

Many of us have heard or read about the dramatic increase in the numbers of people needing food assistance in our area. You or someone in your circle may have needed food assistance. For the first time ever, OFB's distribution of emergency food boxes in Oregon and SW Washington by the OFB topped 1 million (for the 12 months ending 6/30/11), as growing levels of unemployment forced more and more people to fall into poverty and to seek emergency food.

On Halloween, I will be walking the neighborhood with a rolling cart doing “Trick or Treat for the Oregon Food Bank.” Here are several ways Overlook friends & neighbors can participate.

*You can give donatable foods when I come to your door. (see below)
*You can give me a check made out to the Oregon Food Bank (for which you'll get a receipt from them).
*You can drop off contributions to a container on my front step through Tuesday November 1st, and/or
*You can join my team on Halloween so we can cover more territory. If you want to walk the streets collecting, with me or dividing territory, please contact me by 8 pm on Sunday the 30th.

Gilah: seabird24@ yahoo.com for more information.
The Oregon Food Bank website has helpful information about the types of food they can accept for donation: http://www.oregonfoodbank.org Consider donating healthy, low-fat and low-sugar products; there's a great list at the link.

7) Meet The Storyteller at the Historic Overlook House (Mondays)

Jerry Cowan is a long time Overlook resident and has been approved by the State of Oregon Child Care Division background check to work with children. Jerry hosts a free storytelling hour at The Overlook House, 3839 N. Melrose Drive, every Monday Afternoon from 3:30 to 4:30 PM with stories, games and music to entertain children from preschool through elementary grades.

The stories are based on ancient Native American legends and myths handed down for generations and crafted for children. The stories are meant to inspire an appreciation for our forests and animals that inhabit them. Children must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

8) Daimler Trucks North America Hiring Hundreds (current)

Great news from our Swan Island neighbors (you know that Swan Island is part of the Overlook Neighborhood, right?) Daimler Trucks North America; they're hiring!

As reported in The Oregonian and on KGW (I didn't get the press release), company president Martin Daum says that hundreds of new jobs are coming to the facility. A second shift will be added at the truck plant (including engineering jobs) and there are plans to ramp-up production in 2012.

Up to 500 new jobs are expected. Daimler Trucks North America has been a generous contributor to OKNA, allowing us to publish our paper newsletter Overlook Views from 4 to 6 times per year.

Thank you, Daimler Trucks North America, and congratulations!
