h4>Free healthy home check up for families with small children

From the Josiah Hill Clinic…

Local Nonprofit Gives Free Healthy Home Check-Ups!

While most of us have heard of the environmental movement to keep our skies blue and our water clear, you may not have heard of those fighting to keep our indoor environment clean. The Josiah Hill III Clinic (JHC) wants to make sure your home is healthy place to live. Americans spend approximately 90% of their time indoors where the air is 2-5 times more polluted than the air we breathe in the great outdoors. Everyday cleaning supplies can be surprisingly toxic, harmless-seeming mold and mildew can trigger asthma and allergies, and the invisible presence of lead can severely affect the development of children.

Thanks to funding from the Environmental Protection Agency, JHC now offers free Healthy Home Check-Ups to North and Northeast Portland families with small children.  During the one-hour Healthy Home Check-Up, a friendly volunteer or staff member will visit your home and assesses potential hazards, such asthma, allergy, and migraine triggers; lead exposure from paint and other sources; mold and mildew; and toxic chemicals linked to adverse health outcomes. Once hazards are identified, JHC provides consultation on exposure elimination and provides helpful resources and household supplies to assist you in improving the health of your home.

For more information about Josiah Hill III Clinic's programs for improving child health and well-being or to sign up for a Healthy Home Check-Up, contact Amanda Lawrence at Amanda @jhillclinic.org, 503-802-7389, or visit www.jhillclinic.org.

Metro's Restoration and Enhancement Grants Program and Workshops

Helping make the region a great place

Metro grants and technical assistance

The liveliest cities and neighborhoods don't happen by accident. It takes vision, leadership and investment. But how do you turn a good idea into a great project?  Metro can help.

If you have an innovative idea to integrate the natural world into your community please join us for a  workshop about Metro's Nature in Neighborhood grant programs. Participants will learn about the goals, criteria and application procedures of the grant programs as well as how to create a program plan and what resources are available to help get a project started.

The Metro Council's 2006 Natural Areas bond measure established $15 million for the Capital Grants Program to inspire innovative partnerships that enhance ecological functions and increase the presence of nature where people live, work and play. This includes projects that acquire land for public ownership or result in a capital improvement on public land.

A workshop focusing on the Capital Grant program will be offered at two locations:
