1) Overlook yard sale & free share this weekend
Overlook’s annual yard sale returns this weekend. On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., households throughout the neighborhood will have bargains available. This year 36 households signed up to participate, and a few more are likely. Throw on your sneakers or hop on your bike and find some deals.
View an interactive map that shows all of the sale locations in the neighborhood.
On Sunday, we’ll have the free share in which anyone can put items curbside, such as the stuff that didn’t sell the day before, and offer it up free to neighbors. With clear weather ahead, it should be a great day to casually part with unused items, or perhaps find a few scores of your own and spare them from the landfill.
If you have any questions or suggestions, let Josh know at sustainable@overlookneighborhood.org.
2) Sustainable water use in the home
On July 29 the Overlook Goal Zero Energy Meetup will welcome Penny Milton, residential water efficiency coordinator at the Portland Water Bureau. Milton will share ways to save water in our homes.
All residents are welcome to attend the meeting 6-8 p.m. at 1712 N Sumner St. The group will talk about where Portland’s water comes from, the treatment process, understanding water bills, and why and how people should conserve. Milton also will bring free goodies (shower heads, aerators, etc.) to help us use water better.
The Goal Zero Energy Meetup is a group of Overlook residents inspired by the CO2 problem (and the hotter summers and bigger fires) to make their homes more sustainable in every way possible. Every month the group chooses a theme and tries to bring in experts to help learn how people can live more efficiently and with less impact on the planet. It’s a neighbor to neighbor learning network for finding and sharing ways to save resources and get off fossil fuels. The goal is to create community, have fun and answer the problem of our time from the ground up.
3) Highway closures
Remember that southbound I-5 will be closed this weekend from the Fremont Bridge to I-84. The closure begins at 10 p.m. Friday and continues until 5 a.m. Monday. Through traffic should take the Fremont Bridge to I-405 and reconnect with I-5 to the south of the city.
The Oregon Department of Transportation also will wrap up work on the ramp from southbound I-5 to I-84 by Monday. Beginning at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, the ramp from westbound I-84 to northbound I-5 will close. It will re-open on Aug. 6.
4) Save the date: Ice cream social
The annual Overlook Ice Cream Social will take place on Sunday, Aug. 5, 6-8 p.m. at the Historic Overlook House. Mark your calendar now for this family-friendly neighborhood gathering.
