1) Beach Elementary School Harvest Dinner (Sept. 23)

Join the Beach PTA for the third annual Beach School Harvest Dinner. This is an al fresco fundraiser to support the Beach garden. This is the first year of adding after school gardening classes for students through the SUN program.

Buy your ticket or sponsor a teacher or neighbor. And don’t forget to invite a friend. Tickets includes happy hour with wine, beer and cocktails, appetizers, sit down dinner, and dessert. Vegan and gluten-free options available upon request. Last year a large number of Overlook neighbors attended who had no students at Beach.

Thank you for supporting your neighborhood school.

2) Street racing

At the August OKNA general meeting, neighbors voted to ask the Portland City Council and the city to take a more active role in reducing incidents of street racing on Swan Island and nearby streets. Read the full letter send to council here. From the letter:

Residents of the Overlook Neighborhood in North Portland request that you take immediate steps to eliminate street racing that occurs on Swan Island and surrounding streets. These activities are dangerous to residents and travelers as well as disruptive to the neighborhood.

Swan Island, N Going Street and N Greeley Avenue all have seen a troubling increase in the incidence of street racing during the past few months. They race up and down streets in excess of the posted speed limits, rev engines and spin tires and tag property. The noise, smoke and exhaust travel far into the neighborhood, disrupting what should otherwise be peaceful evenings and weekends.

Some residents have sought assistance through the police non-emergency line, but they have received little response and no effective response.

Members of the Overlook Neighborhood Association therefore voted overwhelmingly to reach out to you in the hopes that some action can be taken to discourage street racing. Additional patrols, arrests and prosecution of violators, installing traffic calming devices, and collaborating with the neighborhood on other measures all have low cost but potentially tremendous benefits.

3) Ramp closures on I-5 including N Greeley exit

Interstate 5 ramps, lanes and overpasses from Tualatin to North Portland will be closed for bridge deck seal maintenance. Most work will take place at night or on weekends in September and October. This work is highly weather dependent and will be rescheduled in wet or cold weather.

Bridge deck seals fill cracks and create a barrier to keep water from seeping into bridges. A new deck seal increases the lifespan of bridges.

Below is a list of impacted ramps, overpasses and lanes. Visit TripCheck.com for up-to-date traffic impacts, which may include ramp closures, lane closures and overpass closures.

  • Nyberg Street ramps at I-5 (Exit 289)
  • Carman Drive over I-5.
  • Oregon 217/Kruse Way over I-5.
  • SW 19th Avenue over I-5.
  • Oregon 99W and I-5 interchange.
  • SW Brier Place over I-5.

4) I-5 Rose Quarter improvements open house (Sept. 12)

ODOT and the City of Portland are continuing to study and design improvements to I-5 between I-84 and I-405 and to local streets near the Broadway-Weidler interchange in Portland. They invite the public to an informational open house to learn about the I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project and the planned improvements. The open house is drop-in, so stop by to learn and talk to project team members about:

  • Which highway and local street improvements are planned
  • The project purpose and need
  • Planning history
  • The environmental study process and more!
