2) JOE HAMM  Memorial Jam/Dance  (Saturday 6/30  1:00 – 5:00)

Joe Hamm lived in the Overlook Neighborhood for over 60 years and raised 5 daughters here (the earlier report of 4 daughters was incorrect).  Joe lived in the family home until May 1st, when he died at the age of 95.  He had many friends in the neighborhood.  He was an avid fiddler, and taught fiddle, guitar, and ukulele to many Overlook neighbors.  Joe was very involved in the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers Assoc (OOTFA), and would jam with them several times a month.  The upcoming Memorial/Jam/Dance will be for Family, Overlook Neighbors and Friends, and OOTFA members.  Please join us for memories, music, dancing and fun.  Many of Joe’s friends don’t get these emails, so please pass the news to any neighbors that might be interested.  Thanks, we’ll see you there.

WHERE:  The Polish Hall – 3900 N Interstate Ave.

WHEN:  Saturday, June 30th, 1:00-5:00

3) Fireworks Warnings – Thank You!

Your Communications Chair sends out an especial thanks to the evening walkers group for distributing safety notices from Portland Fire & Rescue. Fireworks used to be fun, but face it, we live in a crowded urban environment that is increasingly flammable. The fireworks-caused restaurant fire on Alberta last year took 5 months and over 1 million $$$ to repair, not to mention the trauma to pets and neighbors and the potential for another devastating fire on the Overlook bluffs.

Please don’t use flying fireworks this year, and join me in thanking these neighborhood volunteers for their help:

Awesome Evening Walkers group (aka the StreetWalkers!) includes neighbors Joyce, Joan, Joann, Michelle, Marjorie, Jane and Julie. A ‘J’  or ‘M’ name is not required to join this group, who support each other in daily walks, especially in the dark days of winter. Thanks!

4) The Storyteller, at the Overlook House (Mondays)

The Storyteller will be at the historic Overlook House Community Center at 3839 N. Melrose Drive every Monday Afternoon from 3:30 to 4:30 PM for a free hour of parent/child playtime with games and toys. Songs and stories will be shared around a make believe campfire in an imaginary northwest forest. Jerry Cowan (The Storyteller) is a long time Overlook resident and has a current approval by the State of Oregon Child Care Division background registry to work with children. The stories involve forest animals playing tricks on each other and having adventures during an ancient time of magic, legend and myth in the Pacific Northwest forest. Some stories are “story-songs” that are crafted to be more compatible with younger children. The Storytellers intent is to host a story hour where families can meet get to know each other and share some quality time with their children. As always, guest storytellers and entertainers are welcome to perform anytime.

For questions or directions contact Jerry Cowan at 503-285-0555

5) Overlook Yard Sale/Free Share (7/21 & 7/22)

Too much stuff STILL clogging up your attic? Last summer’s neighborhood Yard Sale/Free Share was a big success, with over 50 households participating!

We’re doing it again this year with a neighborhood-wide Yard Sale on Saturday the 21st , and a Free Share on Sunday the 22nd. What is a Free Share, you ask? After the yard sale on Saturday, leave anything you’re willing to give away on your front yard or parking strip – clearly marked for Free Share – and neighbors will find what they need or want on Sunday, for free!  (to donate useable things left over from Saturday and Sunday, please call a local charity. They’ll send a truck around during the following week for pickups)  Let’s all clean out our closets!

Deadline July 14 for inclusion on map.  Map posted/emailed around July 16.  Send us your address to register at onest@overlookneighborhood.org.

The Portland Development Commission (PDC) has announced its intent to award $338,495 in Community Livability Grants to projects in the Interstate Corridor (ICURA) and Lents Town Center (LTC URA) Urban Renewal Areas for fiscal year 2012-13.

PDC’s evaluation committee, composed of community members and PDC staff, selected nine projects in the ICURA to receive full or partial funding totaling $273,495, including a universally-accessible playground area at Arbor Lodge Park, a bicycle repair hub and skills track at New Columbia, a small orchard and perennial food forest in the Overlook neighborhood, and a historic building preservation in the Eliot neighborhood.   In the LTC URA, PDC awarded one grant of $65,000 for a workforce development center.

The Community Livability Grant Program, administered by PDC, awards funding annually to projects that involve physical improvements to community facilities, open spaces or historic/cultural preservation.
