1) Micro-apartments proposed for Overlook Neighborhood
A development group has proposed building a five-story micro-apartment building with one retail space on the ground floor at 5134 N Interstate Ave. It will include 61 apartments ranging in size from 202 square feet to 243 square feet. The project will include no parking.
The projects architect will present the proposal and answer questions at Tuesday’s Overlook Neighborhood Association meeting (see below.) You can view the neighborhood notification, which includes a site plan, by clicking here.
2) Street parking permits and more at OKNA general meeting
The Overlook Neighborhood Association will hold its monthly general meeting on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Kaiser Town Hall (3704 N Interstate Ave.). We’ll hear from developers of micro-apartments on N Interstate (see above), developers of projects at 2054 N Killingsworth and 5833 N Maryland.
We’ll also discuss whether Overlook should apply to participate in a pilot street parking permit program. Neighbors have suggested the areas close to Max stops and around adidas as possible sites.
3) N Greeley multi-use path
The Portland Bureau of Transportation is proposing to build the N Greeley multi-use path, a two-way, one-mile path on the east side of N Greeley Avenue from N Going Street to N Interstate Avenue. The two-way bicycle and pedestrian facility will be protected from vehicle traffic with continuous concrete barriers.
N Greeley Avenue is a busy, high-speed road with heavy freight vehicle traffic. This project will protect cyclists and pedestrians behind a continuous concrete barrier connecting North Portland neighborhoods and businesses with the Rose Quarter. In addition, the project will widen the outside lanes to better accommodate truck traffic and increase the buffer between opposing traffic lanes.

4) Pools open on President’s Day
Portland Parks & Recreation pools are offering family swim and open play swim sessions on Monday, the President’s Day holiday, when many area schools do not hold classes. Sure, it might be cold outside, but it will be warmer, wetter and more fun in the pool house. Columbia Pool in North Portland and Matt Dishman Pool in Northeast will be open. Admission is $3.50 for youth and $4.50 for adults.
Columbia will be open 10-1 for family swim and 4-8 p.m. for open swim. Dishman will be open 1:15-3:45 for open swim. Open swims are for all ages. Non-swimmers and children under 48 inches tall must be supervised in the water by an adult swimmer. During Family Swim sessions, children must be accompanied in the water by their parent or guardian.
5) Apply now for dual language immersion programs
Dual language immersion education provides social, cognitive and academic benefits to children and prepares them to be successful in a competitive, global society. Portland Public Schools offers free programs in five languages: Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian and Vietnamese. Our own Overlook neighborhood school, Beach Elementary, houses the Spanish program.
The lottery period for fall kindergartners to enroll in a dual language immersion program opened on Wednesday and continues through March 2. Late entry for students in grades 1-12 is by petition. Apply and learn more on the official website.
While Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin programs often have long wait lists, the Vietnamese program is newer and therefore has more opportunity for enrollment. It will be housed at Rose City Park in NE Portland next year. Native and non-native Vietnamese families looking for a challenging, engaging and highly beneficial language and social program should apply.
An Overlook family with a kindergartener in the Vietnamese program this year is happy to answer questions about it and is available to form study groups, act as carpool partners and provide general support for families interested.
